Sunday, February 08, 2004I was telling someone last night that I rather like hymns. For a couple of reasons. First, lyrics. There's a whole debate about contemporary worship songs and how they focus on the individual rather than God... but I won't get into that. Hymns tend to avoid that kind of stuff and really focus on genuine worship of God, as well as praise for who He is. Second, the chords tend to be pretty easy (this being good for someone like me who is trying to learn guitar). They tend to be just 1, 4, 5, 1, 4, 5, 1, 4, 5... so even if it's in some bizarre key (which it usually isn't), it's easy to transpose and play in an easy key like G or D. Not only are they chords easy, they change a lot. Again, this is good for someone like me who is learning to play because it forces me to practice changing chords quickly and often. |
